John the Baptist Catholic Church, with Father Albert Nunez officiating, for Joseph Gaspard, 68, of Houston, Texas, who died Sunday, June 25, 2000, at 9:30 p.m. in his son's home in Houston, Texas. Burial was in Hanks Cemetery in Morse. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Gaspard, Houston, Texas: one daughter and her spouse, Carla and Raymond Castille of Houston, Texas; three sons and their spouses, Tommy and Cheryl Gaspard. Bernice and Diana Gaspard and Marcus and Susan Gaspard, all of Houston, Texas: his mother.

Gladys Gaspard, Crowley; two sisters, Judy Miller, Crowley, and Mary Brown, Magnola, Texas: three brothers. Percy Gaspard, Lake Jackson, Texas, Paul Gaspard, Houston, Texas, and Donald Gaspard, Crowley; three granddaughters, Kather and Leif Potter, Katie Castille and Taylor Gaspard; seven grandsons, Jamie Gaspard and girlfriend Jodi Bonhomme, Joey Castille, Jeff Gaspard, Bryan Gaspard, Chris Gaspard, Hunter Gaspard, and Spencer Gaspard. Mr. Gaspard battled cancer for the past five and a half years. He passed away with all of his loving family around him.

He and his wife have been married for 47 years. He is a native of Lyons Point and a resident of Houston, Texas, for the past few years. He was preceded in death by his father, Ernest Gaspard; and two sisters, Ethel Melancon and Willie Mae Lambousy. He was engaged in research and teaching at the University of Arkansas and the University of Missouri until 1980 when he joined the Department of Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness at LSU.

In 1983, he moved to the Mississippi Delta Branch Experiment Station as an associate agricultural economist. Two years later he returned to Louisiana as Resident Director of the Rice Research Station. Under Dr. Musick's leadership, the rice research program at the Station has developed into the leading research program in the United States and is recognized internationally as an outstanding research program. Nine rice varieties have been released from the Station during Musick's tenure as Resident Director.

Currently, 'Cypress' (a long grain variety) and 'Bengal' (a medium-grain variety) are the leading varieties in the southern rice industry. Based on acreage estimates provided by the state cooperative extension services and average yields for each respective rice producing state, 'Cocodrie' (a new long grain) and 'Earl' (a new medium grain) released by the Station are expected to become widely adapted by producers in the southern rice growing states.
