Minnie's View by Minnie Deshotel iv 131 A Time to Laugh Please join me in remembering a great icon of thecntertainment community. The Pillsbury Doughboy died yesterday of a yeast infection and complications from repeated pokes to the belly. He was 71.

Doughboy was buried in a lightly greased coffin. Dozens of celebrities turned out to pay their respects, including Mrs. Butterworth, Hungry Jack, the California Raisin. Retry Crocker, the Hostess Twinkies. Little Debbie and Captain Crunch.

The gravesite was piled high with flours. Aunt Jemima delivered the eulogy and lovingly described, Doughboy as "a man who never knew how much he was kneaded." Doughboy rose quickly in show business, but his later life was filled with turnovers. He was not considered a very "smart" cookie, wasting much of his dough on half-baked schemes. Despite being a little flaky at times, he still, as a crusty old man, was considered a roll model for millions. Doughboy leaves his wife, Play Dough, two children, John Dough and Jane Dough (and they had one in the oven).

His elderly father, Pop Tart, also survives him. The funeral was held at 3:50 for about 20 minutes. Okay, folks I presume you are aware that this is not an actual obituary notice. I wish I could take credit for this fantastic play of words but its origin is unknown to me. It was circulating on the internet last year and I saved it for such a time as this.

In response to a number of local inquiries, United Way of Central Louisiana (UWCL) announces the creation of the Central Louisiana Katrina Response Fund. The purpose of the fund is to provide shelter and other needed assistance for evacuees in our area, beyond the short-term emergency shelter already provided through United Way's annual funding of the Red Cross and the Salvation Army. The fund will provide an avenue for those who wish to designate special contributions beyond the annual United Way campaign. This fund will support the efforts of those agencies and other agencies involved in evacuee support; it will not compete with those efforts.

Two important distinctions must be made about this fund," said UWCL president David Britt. "First this fund will not duplicate other efforts for emergency shelter such as those by the American Red Cross and the Salvation Army. We fund and support those efforts. However, Cenla is facing an unprecedented need of shelter for potentially several months. Our normal emergency shelter system cannot possjWy provide shelter for this period of lime.

This fund will step in to support the agencies that provide for the needs of evacuees at the point where our normal systems run out "Second, all of these funds will be used locally. None will be sent outside the boundaries of Central Louisiana. Other funds exist for support elsewhere, and we support them. This, fund, however, will remain exclusively local in its focus." Donations may be sent to the GET ON THE ROAD TO A NEW START Avoyelles Parish Legal Records From the office of Clerk of Court Samuel Couvillon United Way of Central Louisiana office at P.O. Box 749.

Alexandria. LA 71309-0749. Please make checks payable to the Central Louisiana Katrina Response Fund. A second major response is the creation of a drop-off center and a volunteer center at the old Sally's location on the comer of Jackson Street Extension and Wimbledon. Those who wish to donate clothing, towels, soap and other hygiene products for evacuees may bring them to this site.

The items will be distributtsfwrrong helping agencies. Individuals and families may not pick up items from this site; it is intended exclusively as a central drop-off point Volunteers may also register to help with the relief effort at this site or call 443-7203 or 767-1107. This location was arranged by the American Red Cross and is being staffed and organized by volunteers working through the United Way. Two United Way of Central Louisiana websites direct people to local assistance. The Guide to Human Services website, HYPERLINK "http:www.guidetohu-manscrvices.org" www.guidetohu-manscrvices.org, has been augmented to include information vital to the Katrina response effort.

A second site. HYPERLINK "http:www.uwcl.org" www.uwcl.org, will be used to post updated information as events develop.
